One of the most important developmental activities for infants is tummy time. Placing your baby on their tummy helps to strengthen their neck, back, and shoulder muscles, which are crucial for achieving important milestones like rolling over, sitting up, and crawling. Tummy time also helps to prevent flat spots on the back of the baby’s head and promotes healthy development of their motor skills.

It’s essential to start tummy time as early as possible, ideally within the first few days of bringing your baby home from the hospital. Here is a general guideline for tummy time by age:

0-3 Months:

For newborns, aim for short tummy time sessions of 1-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day. Use a soft blanket or play mat on the floor and place your baby on their tummy while they are awake and alert. Engage with them by making eye contact, talking, or playing with toys to keep them entertained.

4-6 Months:

As your baby grows, you can gradually increase tummy time sessions to 10-15 minutes, 3-4 times a day. Encourage them to lift their head and chest off the ground by placing toys just out of reach. You can also try tummy time on a slightly inclined surface like a nursing pillow for added challenge.

Remember that every baby is different, and it’s essential to listen to your baby’s cues. If they become fussy or uncomfortable during tummy time, take a break and try again later. With consistent practice, your baby will gradually build strength and confidence in their tummy time skills.
